Architecture and history
Construction of St. Stephen’s Cathedral began in the 12th century and lasted several centuries, incorporating various architectural styles. The original Romanesque building was replaced and extended over time with Gothic elements. The 136-metre-high south tower, also known as the “Steffl”, is particularly striking and dominates the skyline of Vienna. The north tower, on the other hand, remained unfinished and today houses the Pummerin, one of the largest bells in Europe.
