Baroque Belvedere Palace
Belvedere Palace in Vienna is an impressive Baroque palace complex consisting of two main palaces: the Upper and Lower Belvedere. These architectural masterpieces were built in the early 18th century for Prince Eugene of Savoy, a successful general and patron of the arts. The Belvedere is not only an outstanding example of Baroque architecture, but also houses one of the most important art collections in Austria.
Upper Belvedere
The Upper Belvedere, completed in 1723, towers majestically over an extensive garden and offers a breathtaking view of Vienna’s city center. The palace’s façade is richly decorated and the interior impresses with its magnificent halls and elaborate stucco work. Particularly noteworthy are the Marble Hall, known for its impressive frescoes and statues, and the chapel with its baroque high altar.
Lower Belvedere
The Lower Belvedere, originally used as a residential and representative building for Prince Eugene, was completed in 1716. It is characterized by its elegant architecture and beautifully designed interiors, including the Grotesque Halls, the Marble Gallery and the magnificent Golden Gallery. The Great Hall in the Lower Belvedere is particularly magnificent and was used as a banqueting hall.
Garden area
The two palaces are connected by a magnificent Baroque garden, which is one of the most beautiful of its kind in Europe. The garden is divided into three terraces, which are connected by artistic fountains, sculptures and manicured parterres. This complex symbolizes the ascent of the soul and the harmony between man and nature.
