Description

This half-day tour of the historic site of Mayerling, at the heart of the Wienerwald or Vienna Woods, the 45-kilometers-long swathe of forested highlands carpeting much of the region surrounding the capital which are a much-loved recreation spot for locals. The romantic route through the woods is home to a host of interesting historic sites, including Liechtenstein Castle, part of the city’s defenses along the Danube since the twelfth century, Heiligenkreuz Abbey, a Cistercian monastery complete with an impressive Gothic cloister and the chapel at Mayerling, home to the hunting lodge where Crown Price Rudolf and his mistress, Baroness Mary Vetsera, perished together in an apparent murder-suicide. Another highlight is the city of Baden with over a dozen Sulphur springs which are brought to the surface from a depth of about 1.000 meter. You will then take the much-loved wine route to enjoy some time relaxing and chatting about the day’s experiences at a Heuriger, one of the typically Viennese taverns serving that year’s new wine harvest.
