Description of the Grand City Tour Vienna
ur “Grand City Tour Vienna” begins by taking you along Vienna’s famous Ringstrasse with its countless magnificent buildings from the Wilhelminian era, right past the “First House on the Ring”, the Vienna State Opera. With around 350 performances per season, the Vienna State Opera is one of the most famous opera houses in the world.
The first stop on your “Grand City Tour Vienna” takes you to the Vienna Hofburg and its gardens. The Vienna Hofburg was the seat of the Habsburgs in Vienna from the 13th century until the end of the monarchy in 1918 and thus the official residence of many emperors. The building complex comprises 10 wings and around 2,600 rooms. Among other things, it houses the “Sisi Museum” and the famous Silver Collection. Today, the Hofburg is the workplace of the Austrian Federal President.
The Burggarten was originally laid out in the early 19th century as a private garden for Emperor Franz 1. This wonderful garden in the heart of the city is home to monuments dedicated to Mozart and the late Baroque Emperor Franz Stephan, among others. The Palmenhaus, an elegant café with brasserie and bar, offers a beautiful view over the garden and invites you to linger.
After this stop, the journey continues past the two large Ringstrasse museums, the Natural History Museum and the Art History Museum. The two museums opposite each other on the Burgring are architecturally perfect twins.
The Natural History Museum has a collection of over 30 million objects, of which around 100,000 are on display. With its priceless art collections, the Kunsthistorisches Museum is one of the most important museums of its kind in the world.
Next, the route leads past the Vienna Giant Ferris Wheel. This city landmark was built in 1897 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Emperor Franz Joseph I’s accession to the throne and has been the backdrop for several Hollywood films.
Past the largest business university in Europe, whose central building complex was designed by Zaha Hadid and the building designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser you reach the last stop on your Grand City Tour Vienna: Belvedere Palace.
The painting created by Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt for Prince Eugene is a unique jewel. The Upper and Lower Belvedere, together with the connecting gardens, form a unique ensemble. The two palace buildings house art collections and rooms for temporary exhibitions.
The heart of the “Art around 1900” collection presented in the Upper Belvedere is the world’s largest Gustav Klimt collection. Highlights include his famous painting “The Kiss”. Masterpieces by Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka can also be found here.
